Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs versus Incandescent Light Bulbs

Even though Incandescent light bulbs seem to be cheaper when you buy them, compact fluorescent light bulbs are the cheaper options that are better for the environment. They are brighter and they last longer. So, you don’t have to buy replacements as often. Some compact fluorescent light bulbs can use up 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs. They can also last up to ten years longer. Overall, compact fluorescent light bulbs are the better choice.

Deforestation by ML

To understand why deforestation is important you must realize these facts.

  • Rainforest give up to 50-90% of all organisms
  • Not only are they at risk the human race also benefits from what the trees give.
  • From something as minor as the spices that indulge food to life giving medicines, the rainforests amplify and save lives.
  • According to World Rainforest Movement over 25% of medicines come from the rainforest.
  • Trees improve the quality of the air that species breath by trapping carbon and other particles produced by pollution.
  • Trees also determine rainfall, and replenish the atmosphere

As more water gets put back in the atmosphere, clouds form and provide another way to block out the suns heat. Trees are what cool and regulates the earth

s climate in conjunction with other such valuable services as preventing erosion, landslides, and making the most infertile soil rich with life. Mother earth has given much responsibility to trees.

We can still save our earth although it is hurt right now.

We as human beings play a part in all of this, we can produce less products that require trees to make. China also took into this People's Republic of China, where large scale destruction of forests has occurred, the government has in the past required that every able-bodied citizen between the ages of 11 and 60 plant three to five trees per year or do the equivalent amount of work in other forest services. The government claims that at least 1 billion trees have been planted in China every year since 1982. We can also plant more trees as community service or switch to a more efficient and less consuming way of logging.

Water Pollution

Water makes up most of our earth’s surface. Of the 70% of water in the world, only 3% of it is freshwater available to human. Pollution is slowly destroying our water supply. Most of the pollution comes from sewage and industry. It spreads through water as it flows. Contaminated water can cause serious health problems and is responsible for 7 million deaths in the US every year. Pollution is also one of the most prominent environmental problems in the world today.

The water we have today is the only water we will ever have on the planet. The dirt, grime, and contaminants, such as oil and dirt, can flow through the water into rivers, lakes, and oceans. Oil that gets into the water is very hard to get out as well as industrial waste and sewage. Even though sometimes we can remove the pollutants, it is very hard to do so if it has been laying there for months. Trash that gets into the water is also damaging to wildlife that we depend on for food. It is slowly ruining our supply of water, which is a very precious resource. We need to take action and clean up our acts to cut down on water pollution. The damage it causes to the environment is too prominent to ignore.

“Wildlife Conservation Deforestation, and Global Warming,”

Today, it feels like we have all these problems in the world. Though it’s important to deal with terrorists and mercury poisoning, we need to have a world to have problems in. In reverence of Earth Day and Earth Week, here are some articles to explain and give advice about the most important problem today: keeping our Earth healthy!

Wildlife Conservation

Since people evolved on this Earth, we’ve been fascinated by animals. And also since people arrived, animals have been going extinct. There are various reasons for this but one of the most prominent today is wildlife conservation. As the population grows, humans need more space to live and work in. The problem is that we are moving into the territory of the animals and they are forced to move elsewhere. Sometimes they can’t adapt to the new environment and die, are killed by the native species of the area, or kill off the native species and upset the natural balance. Though it seems like there is no hope for this problem, here’s what you can do to help. You can donate money to organizations such as Save the Rainforest of the Defenders of Wilderness or start your own program to help. Writing letters to your representatives in Congress to stop building so many new houses in the woods and keeping buildings compact are another good way to help. Have your friends join you in the effort so you all can make a difference. The animals can’t speak up for themselves so they need out help to survive and keep their homes.

Grey Wolf

The wildlife conservation is very important to a lot of animals. One animal that is endangered is the Gray Wolf. Usually the Gray Wolf lives 7-8 years, even 10 sometimes, but we are cutting their lives short. The Gray Wolf is endangered because of lack of livestock, farmers are not letting the wolves eat any of their livestock even if it is dead. Also wolves are endangered because humans are moving into their territory. Personally, I don’t like that at all. What we can about the endangerment of these wolves is we can stop taking their territory because their dying. Another thing that we can do is stop this endangerment is to stop cutting down trees because wolves need trees to live in because that is their habitat. We humans these days have become well, greedy. Sometimes we take land we don’t even need to survive. We forget that we are endangering the world and the animals in it. Wildlife conservation is good because we can stop endangering animals and let them live and have a good life.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Alternative fuel vehicles are cars that are designed to run on a fuel source different from gas, or a combination of an alternative fuels and gas. Some alternative fuel cars can even run on air or natural gas! Hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius can run on gas, electricity, or a combination of both. Some are plug-in hybrids that recharge their electric batteries by being plugged into a wall. They get excellent gas mileage because they run on an electric motor and a smaller gas engine than you’d see in other cars. Flex-fuel cars can run on ethanol, a fuel made of plant sugar. A drawback of these cars is that sugarcane ethanol is the only good ethanol in terms of emissions, and ethanol isn’t as flammable, so Flex-fuel cars get less mileage on it. Modern, cleaner cars that run on diesel get better mileage than other cars because diesel is more flammable than gasoline, which makes up for the fact that diesel is an expensive (and stinky when burned by most trucks) fuel source. Electric cars run solely on electricity and usually have to be plugged into a wall to recharge. The Tesla Roadster is a $100,000 electric car that can go almost 250 miles when you plug it in and charge it for five hours, and it can go from 0-60 mph in almost 4 seconds on its 6,831 Lithium-Ion batteries that only cost a few bucks to charge! Hydrogen cars like the BMW Hydrogen 7 can run on hydrogen in certain forms, and the engines of hydrogen cars are quieter than gasoline cars.

Saving Energy in Your Home

There are many ways to save energy in you home. One way is to set your thermostat at least five degrees lower when you are sleeping. Air conditioning and heat can be dramatically lost because of dust, so clean you furnaces and vents often. Seal cracks around windows and doors to prevent cold air from getting in during the winter. Make sure you don’t cover up air vents with carpet, furniture, or bags. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, and make sure all faucets and shower heads are water efficient. Using natural light rather than artificial light can save a lot on electricity bills. Only use dishwashers, dryers, or washing machines when there is a full load in them. Also, turn down your house temperature when no one is home, especially for long trips. Completely unplugging something from an electrical socket can save a lot of energy too. Finally, make sure you plug gaps around pipes and fans that go through exterior walls or in the ceiling. Using these simple methods can reduce the amount of energy you use in you home immensely.
